Termites are probably the best known wood damaging insects in the world. While there are plenty of other varieties of bugs that do bore through wood and could infect your home, termites do more damage in a shorter period of time. The problem with termites lies in the fact that they can be difficult to detect before they have done major damage to your home. In as little as a few years, it is possible to have structural damage to your home if termites are left unchecked, so it is important to be on the lookout for signs that they are in the area.

Some of the more obvious signs can’t usually be noticed until extensive damage has already been done. There are some early warning signs that can be easier to spot however. If you notice swarming termites in the spring, or their shed wings near your home, you should contact an exterminator immediately. You can also check for mud tunnels climbing up the side of your foundation. Knocking on wooden sections of your home and checking for sawdust can also give you a hint that something is up.

Having your own well gives you control over the water in your home, but it also comes with many possible headaches. Often, the water that you have in your well will need some treatment before it is usable. Mineral deposits and gasses are very common with well water. It is also important to have your well water tested regularly, since conditions can change over time. While there are test kits that you can buy, these usually don’t give you a good enough picture of the water quality. It is better to send a water sample to a lab where they can test it for you.

You should know where your well is located, since you need to keep the area safe. Chemicals that spill on the ground above the well could seep down into your water, contaminating it. Avoid parking vehicles on top of the well since they could leak gas, oil or coolant there.

Many of us had a night light as children. There is something comforting about being able to see things in your room at night, so you know there aren’t any monsters hiding in the corners. Night lights can also be helpful when trying to find your way to the bathroom at night without disturbing anyone else.

There are many different types of nightlights, both in the way they look and how they function. Some are equipped with motion sensors so they only turn on when you need them. Others are equipped with a switch so you can turn them on and off at will. If you look around, you should be able to find one that fits your needs just perfectly. A word of caution, however: Don’t just settle on the cheapest alternative you can find! There are some manufacturers out there that make products that aren’t safe, and the potential for a night light to turn into a fire hazard or an electrocution risk is pretty big if inferior materials or poor manufacturing is involved.

How much money have you spent on all the electronics in your home? For many, the sum might add up to more than you would like to think about. The truth is that most of us have quite a few electronics that are pricey, and even if they are not the top of the line, it would still be costly to replace them. So when there is a lightning storm near your home, you probably want to make sure that a surge doesn’t all of a sudden reduce your electronics to a worthless pile of plastic and metal.

Lightning storms and other surges in the electrical grid are more common in certain parts of the country, but just because it doesn’t happen very often where you live, doesn’t mean that you couldn’t have the misfortune of experiencing one. This is why you should have your electronics plugged into a surge protector. They are made especially to prevent surges from damaging your electronics, but for them to function, you first need to make sure your surge protector is plugged into a properly grounded wall receptacle. You also need to pay attention to the indicator light that lets you know it is functioning, since a surge protector can be burned out after a few surges, and after that won’t offer any protection.

If you are looking for a beautiful, natural siding material, wood siding is probably going to be your first choice. Wood siding has been used for a very long time, and even though cheaper and more versatile materials have been introduced, it still sees a lot of use. While wood siding is beautiful and friendly for the environment, it does have several major drawbacks.

Wood siding can get attacked by wood boring insects, and get eaten from the inside out, and on top of that, the insects inside the wood could attract woodpeckers pecking holes in your siding. It could also be damaged by rot if it were to get wet, or it could grow moss or mold.

On top of all those issues, it is also one of the more expensive types of siding you can choose.

When you install wood siding on your home, you have to commit to take care of it if you want it to look good and last a long time.

Keeping down energy cost is a concern for most homeowners. Energy costs are constantly rising, so that is a good incentive to save on energy, but there is also the effect that energy production has on our environment to consider. While there are many green alternatives, energy production is still a major source of pollution.

So, what are some simple things that you can do to keep your energy usage down?

Your appliances are usually the biggest energy drains in your home. By exchanging old appliances for new, energy-saving ones, you can cut a large chunk out of your monthly energy bill.

Lightbulbs might seem like a minor expense, but have you ever added up how many bulbs you have in your home? If they are old style incandescent bulbs, about 95% of the energy they use is wasted as heat.

By replacing them with LED or CFL bulbs you can make a big difference.

When you step outside and look at the roofs in your neighborhood, what do you see? In most neighborhoods, you will find that the majority of homes have asphalt shingle roofs. The reason for this is a combination of price and durability. For the price, you can’t get a better roofing material.

On top of the reasonable price, asphalt shingles are also simple to install. They can be installed on top of existing shingles if you so wish, and they can be removed fairly easily as well.

How do you care for an asphalt shingle roof?

Just like most roofing materials, water can do damage to asphalt shingles if it sits there for a long time. You want to make sure that your gutters drain well, and don’t allow branches and leaves to sit on top of the roof, retaining moisture, since this can encourage mold and moss growth. You should also make sure that the protective surface of the shingles doesn’t wear off, since this can decrease their lifespan.

Masonry work can add a lot of character to a home. If the masonry work is exposed to the elements, however, it can get damaged over time. As with a lot of damaging conditions, water is usually involved. As masonry work ages, it will crack, and these cracks will let water enter, which then will cause the crack to expand even wider. In time, your once beautiful masonry work will be crumbling apart.

What can you do to prevent this from happening? Your first step is preventing water from entering the cracks in the first place. There are different types of sealant available that will last for quite a while, but it is important to keep up with it, since the sealant will wear off over time.

You should also make sure that the ground is properly graded to drain water away from your masonry work, so that water isn’t pooling around it.

There are few things that are more welcome on a hot, blustery day than some shade underneath a tree. Interestingly, you might just think of the shade as the relief provided, but did you know that there is another reason you feel cool underneath a tree? This is because trees constantly release water vapor into the air, cooling down the surrounding air further.

If you feel relieved underneath a tree, you can easily see how the same process would cool down your home. In fact, by just planting trees in the right locations, you could save as much as 10% off of your cooling bill annually.

You want to plant trees that aren’t prone to insect infestations, since these can carry over to your home. Also, you should make sure that they aren’t the type that grows quickly, since they are more likely to lack the stability that is needed to be safe near a home.

If you live in an area where wildfires are common, you might want to refrain from using trees for shade, since they could instead become a fire hazard.

Do the trees in your front yard all of a sudden seem to flourish and grow faster than ever? While you might think that this is due to your green fingers, it is quite possible that you have a food source for the trees that is constantly supplying them with fertilized water – your plumbing.

Many plumbing systems have been backed up by a collection of tree roots inside of the pipes. A small crack or dislodged pipe is enough for the persistent tree roots to pry the pipes open and let more roots in and release more nutritious sewer water. It won’t be long before your sewer water backs up into your house.

There are some temporary fixes that will clear out the roots and clear a path through your pipes again, but unfortunately, it won’t take long for the roots to take over once more. The only permanent fix involves digging up the pipe and making sure it is sealed well.
