One thing that you won’t find a lot of homeowners express is how much they enjoy dealing with their Homeowners Association. While some are happy to live in a neighborhood where there is an HOA, there could be quite a few issues for those that are dealing with an HOA that is very controlling.
When you are considering a home in a neighborhood that has an HOA, it doesn’t hurt to first do some research on the dealings of the HOA to find out if it is going to work for you.
Discreetly asking neighbors how they feel about the HOA can give you an idea. How strict are the rules for what you can build and how you should keep your home and yard? What happens when someone has a disagreement with the HOA?
If you find that there are a lot of foreclosures in the neighborhood, you should check and see if the HOA has the right to make non-judicial foreclosures. This would allow the HOA to put a home in foreclosure if the owner isn’t paying his dues. Needless to say, this is something that has been abused in some neighborhoods.
