Having your own well gives you control over the water in your home, but it also comes with many possible headaches. Often, the water that you have in your well will need some treatment before it is usable. Mineral deposits and gasses are very common with well water. It is also important to have your well water tested regularly, since conditions can change over time. While there are test kits that you can buy, these usually don’t give you a good enough picture of the water quality. It is better to send a water sample to a lab where they can test it for you.
You should know where your well is located, since you need to keep the area safe. Chemicals that spill on the ground above the well could seep down into your water, contaminating it. Avoid parking vehicles on top of the well since they could leak gas, oil or coolant there.
