The first way is to use a pillowcase to clean your ceiling fan blades. Lightly spray the inside of an old pillowcase with either a solution of vinegar and water or with an all-purpose cleaner. Then place the pillowcase over the blade. Next, pull the pillowcase towards you and wipe the blade as you go. This will trap the dust and debris inside the pillowcase instead of all over your room.
The next way to clean your ceiling fans is to wipe down your lightbulbs with a dry microfiber cloth. Wait until your lightbulbs are completely cool before you do this. Then if your ceiling fan has glass globes, remove these and wash them with warm soapy water.
The last way to clean your ceiling fan without making a huge mess is to try to clean your ceiling fans twice a year. This way it will reduce the amount of dust buildup which will help you to make less of a mess.
