What in the world is that smell?!?! If you ever stepped into your kitchen and asked that question, you know how disconcerting it can be to have foul smells in the same room where you prepare your food. The question should be “Where is that smell coming from” instead, so that you can find the source and do something about it.

One issue that you will find in many kitchens is that there are food scraps stuck in the garbage disposal. These scraps will start to rot and mold, causing that terrible smell. To prevent this from happening to you, there are a few steps you should take. First, avoid running fibrous vegetables through the garbage disposal.

Broccoli, celery, asparagus and similar items tend to wrap themselves around the gears and getting stuck in there. You also need to avoid turning the water off right away after you finish with the garbage disposal, instead letting the water rinse off the blades as they are running. If you need to clean the blades, running ice cubes through the garbage disposal should do the trick.
